Bangladesh vs. New Zealand, 2nd Test: Santner-Phillips Helped New Zealand Equalise the Series 1-1

The 2nd Test between Bangladesh and New Zealand, played at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka from December 6th to 10th, 2023, was a thrilling match that went down to the wire. New Zealand won the toss and elected to field first.

Despite a strong start by the openers, Bangladesh’s batting collapsed against the spin of Ajaz Patel and Mitchell Santner. Mushfiqur Rahim top-scored with 35, but no other batsman could reach 30. Bangladesh were bowled out for 172 in 66.2 overs.

In response, New Zealand also struggled against the spin of Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam. Only Glenn Phillips with 87 and Tom Latham with 31 managed to score substantial runs. New Zealand were all out for 180 in 37 overs, giving Bangladesh a slender 8-run lead.

Bangladesh’s second innings was even shorter than their first, as they were bundled out for 144 in 35 overs. This time, Ajaz Patel was the wrecker-in-chief, taking 6 wickets for 57 runs. Set a target of 137 to win, New Zealand started poorly and lost 6 wickets for 69 runs. However, a brilliant partnership of 70 between Glenn Phillips (40*) and Mitchell Santner (35*) took New Zealand to victory with 4 wickets remaining.

The Dhaka Test may have finished within four days, but it offered a dramatic contest despite losing close to five sessions. While the pitch will undoubtedly spark conversation, New Zealand will be ecstatic with their rebound after a 150-run defeat in the first Test.

On a surface where batting was a nightmare, Glenn Phillips stood tall. His resilient 87(72) and unbeaten 40*(48) were crucial to the Kiwis’ victory. He also fittingly hit the winning runs, further solidifying his hero status.

For Bangladesh, it’s a missed opportunity of historic proportions. After winning the first Test, they had a golden chance to secure their first-ever Test series win over New Zealand. They won the crucial toss and the conditions seemed tailor-made for their spin attack. However, Phillips proved to be their nemesis, playing like a man possessed in both innings.
