FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023: Sweden Demolished Italy to Win 5-0

Sweden put on a show to destroy Group G foes Italy and advance to the Women’s World Cup’s round of 16 with one game remaining.

When Amanda Ilestedt, Fridolina Rolfo, and Stina Blackstenius scored in a span of seven minutes at the conclusion of the first half, the 2019 semifinalists demonstrated why they still rank among the top players in the women’s game.

new Arsenal acquisition Rolfo, a Champions League champion with Barcelona, doubled the lead with her knee following another corner after Ilestedt had opened the scoring with a looping header from Jonna Andersson’s corner.

A third goal was given up by Italy, who had kept their opponents off the scoreboard in six of their previous 13 World Cup games, when Blackstenius, another Arsenal player, finished from close range.

In front of 29,143 spectators, Le Azzurre’s situation only became worse when Ilestedt added the fourth goal, her third of the competition, with another header from yet another corner.

In the 95th minute, substitute Rebecka Blomqvist added the fifth goal. In the knockout round, Sweden will play either the United States, the Netherlands, or Portugal.

With three points from two games, Italy is still in second place in the group, but to advance to the next round, they must defeat South Africa on Wednesday in Wellington (08:00 BST).
